  • Quilling | ProfCasilli

The quilling technique The term quill identifies the longest feathers of birds that in the past were used to obtain writing feathers, and in particular the central part which corresponds to a hollow straw. By extension the term also indicates the quills, for example of the porcupine or porcupine. Starting from this context, the regular verb to quill was born which means to tightly wrap a material (usually a yarn) around a central element and here we are in quilling , also called 'paper filigree', a decorative technique based on the winding of strips of paper on a stick. It is a very versatile technique, i.e. adaptable and flexible, with which beautiful works can be created. The origin is very far in the past and it goes back even to the ancient Egyptians who, rolling gold and silver threads, used it to create beautiful jewels. Here is an example. It is a bracelet from the tomb of a queen of Upper Egypt who lived in the 1st century AD. C., discovered by an Italian treasure hunter in 1834 (Giuseppe Ferlini ). This art continued to be practiced by different civilizations for many centuries. In the Middle Ages this technique was used by monks to embellish the covers of sacred books. The term quilling is precisely linked to this particular experience because the monks used the goose quills with which they also wrote to roll up the metal threads to create the decorations. The bracelet is part of a rich treasure found in the tomb of Queen Amanishakheto and now kept in the Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst in Munich (Germany) creative commons license: By Einsamer Schütze - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=13686594 After the Middle Ages, due to the rarity and the increasing cost of materials, gold and silver were replaced with paper. This decorative art, never completely forgotten, came back into fashion in the seventeenth century and later in the Victorian era, when it became a recreational pastime for upper-class ladies. • Paesaggio con montagne | ProfCasilli

LANDSCAPE WITH MOUNTAINS WITH INCREASING GRADATION OF INTENSITY Observing the landscape, Leonardo da Vinci realizes that the more distant mountains are, the clearer and less defined they appear. This phenomenon is called aerial perspective and you too can easily observe it. The cause of this phenomenon, as Leonardo already explains, is the presence of air between the eye of the observer and the object that is far away. In fact, so many corpuscles are suspended in the air which, when hit by the light of the sun, reflect the light. The farther the object is, the more this diffuse light interferes with our eye . The aerial perspective of the landscape in the painting Annunciation of the Virgin by Leonardo da Vinci PREPARATION OF THE WORKSPACE the sheet must be smaller than the media it should be glued with the paper tape making a frame all around the sheet should not be peeled off until the job it is finished and dry Execution To begin we prepare a sheet (a quarter of your rough drawing sheet is more than enough) glued to the support with paper-tape. Prepare the diluted blue color (prepare a good amount so you don't have to do it again in the course of work) Spread evenly across the paper and leave some white space for clouds only at the top of your sky. Let it dry Paint a mountain just below the clouds and work your way to the bottom of the paper. Let it dry again. Paint the second mountain (move the top a little so that it does not coincide with the previous one) After letting it dry, proceed with the subsequent drafts. As you can see, each draft appears a little more intense than the previous one: it is because the watercolor is transparent and each draft is added to the previous one. ATTENTION! When painting the different mountains, make sure that the top is always within the space already painted in the previous draft, otherwise your mountain will be 'cut' - one part will be lighter and another darker, ruining the final effect. NOTE: How to tell when the sheet is dry enough to work on it again Since this technique requires the use of a lot of water, it is normal for the sheet (especially if it is not watercolor paper of good thickness) to swell. It is precisely for this reason that before starting to paint we have to glue it to the support with a frame of paper tape all around. When the sheet dries, it returns to spread out. Also, by touching the sheet with your hand, you should feel it no longer wet and cold. Back to Watercolor Go to Dilution

  • Embossing | ProfCasilli

The embossing technique The embossing is a very ancient technique that allows to model metal plates obtaining concave objects, such as cups, vases, etc., or bas-reliefs. Famous is the so-called mask of Agamemnon , a Mycenaean work dating back to around 1,500 BC, which was discovered by Heinrich Schliemann in 1876. The technique was used by several ancient civilizations and continued to be used afterwards. The Lombards, and after them the Carolingians, were particularly skilled in the use of this technique. In Milan, in the church of Sant'Ambrogio, it is possible to see the work of the master Carolingio Vuolvino : an altar completely decorated with embossed gold and silver plates. This technique is still used for the creation of precious and unique objects, which have a certainly greater value than those obtained industrially with modern molding techniques. Embossing with the traditional technique Tutorial EXAMPLES OF THE MAIN STEPS Draw on the plate, straightening and embossing of two simple shapes Drawing with wooden skewer on the back of the plate (silver side). On the left the indented mark, on the right the raised mark. Remember to use a notebook as a base. Beginning of the overhang how does the overhang on the obverse of the slab appear Continue with the overhang per ottenere maggior volume, si continua a lavorare dal retro della lastra. Utilizziamo anche il batuffolo di cotone per togliere eventuali imperfezioni Result qui puoi vedere il risultato dello sbalzo di queste due semplici forme, seguito dal raddrizzamento della lastra The moon: example of a shape in which only the outline sign is embossed, while the interior and exterior are on the same level I draw a wedge of the moon on the back of the plate utilizzo lo spiedino e appoggio la lastra sul quaderno the relief drawing seen from the obverse (the moon appears upside down) External straightening Sul lato dritto della lastra, utilizzando lo spiedino di legno, faccio un segno incavato all'esterno del profilo a rilievo della luna Internal straightening Sempre lavorando sul dritto della lastra, disegno un segno di raddrizzamento anche all'interno della forma della luna. Examples of stippling for background decoration To complete the embossing work, you can insert textures with marks obtained with different tools or with a simple dotting. To decide what the best effect is, you can experiment with a piece of plate. • Romanticism | ProfCasilli

Romanticism refusal of academicism and greater expressive freedom of artists in technique, but also in the choice of their subjects VIDEO LESSON I insert the link to a video lesson on Romanticism that I prepared last year and which seems to me well done. Unfortunately, the presentation I had created on the subject was lost. I hope it will be useful to you TIME LINE Romanticism is historically characterized by the fall of Napoleon (Battle of Waterloo) and the subsequent Restoration , with consequent national uprisings for the conquest of independence . It was born in a climate of social and political crisis that produces a sense of uncertainty . We realize that Reason is not enough to contain all the multiple and multifaceted reality of man. We are witnessing a change of taste and perspective in which the rationalist vision of the eighteenth century falls, leaving more and more space for the unconscious and the less clear sides of human nature and which will find the ideal background in the rediscovery of the Gothic period , in which they will be set. novels characterized by dark atmospheres. Inizio pagina Main features a style not only artistic, but also literary, musical and cultural fall of Napoleon Restoration strong and unconscious emotions instead of Reason rediscovery of the religious spirit (faith in a being or a superior force external to man, and therefore uncontrollable) Industrial Revolution bourgeoisie and proletariat rediscovery of the Gothic (in literature - Gothic novel and in architecture - Neo-Gothic style FUNDAMENTAL THEMES NATURE LOVE OF PATRIA HEROISM SUBLIME The term Romanticism does not only mean an artistic style, but also a wide-ranging literary, musical and cultural style . From a social as well as an artistic point of view, attention shifts from the aristocracy to the bourgeoisie and the new social class of the proletariat that was born from the industrial revolution . Art is no longer exclusive to the noble classes, but is increasingly commissioned by the exponents of the new bourgeoisie. Within Romanticism, different strands emerge: one that focuses more on the landscape , investigating atmospheric phenomena, one that makes the subconscious and the unconscious prevail, inspired by new reflections in the psychological field (Freud and Jung); a more historical one, in which, through the representation of moments from past history, we speak of the present, of the desire of nations to achieve independence from external rulers, in which some characters become a symbol of the effort of some to oppose domination and 'injustice and in which the movements of the people are also represented and a more realistic one who prefers themes of everyday life, both to tell the change of life in the cities following the industrial revolution, and the innovations brought by technology, and the living conditions of the new social classes (the urban proletariat, in particular) and which aims to spread a certain sensitivity towards the poor living conditions in the suburbs of cities, the exploitation of labor in factories, female and child labor, with the aim of contributing to the change in the social and political situation. The boundaries are not precise between one and the other strand and often the themes are mixed in works with multiple aspects. What is certain is that the painters' gaze is more realistic and gradually we move away from the somewhat aseptic art of the Neoclassical period, which continues to be taught in the academies. This means that many artists begin their training within these institutions, but then leave due to incompatibility trying to open new paths that better respond to the growing need for freedom . In painting this translates into brushstrokes charged with matter, often rapid and full of energy, while in sculpture less defined forms are experimented, starting from the suggestion of Michelangelo's technique of the unfinished. In a schematic way, we can say that Romanticism is characterized by a flourishing of dualisms , contrasts between opposite aspects, which find expression in a Nature charged with vital and at the same time destructive energy . At the basis of the various dualisms lies the conception of a complex human nature made up of rationality and emotions , sometimes uncontrollable because they are linked to the unconscious . Recurring and typical themes of Romanticism are, in addition to Nature , love of country , heroism and the sublime . Nature, it becomes the protagonist of the works not as a simple reproduction of reality, but as a mirror of the emotions that man feels . I would like to underline that when we talk about feelings and emotions in Romanticism we are far from the meaning with which this term is commonly used: Romanticism is not romanticism and not even sentimentality. Nature is no longer a simple background in paintings whose protagonists are important men, but it itself becomes the protagonist. The love of country is directly linked to the historical events that see peoples move to regain their political independence. Heroism is linked to a vision in which it is the individual who makes the difference and personally opposes the forces of evil at the cost of his own life. The sublime is the attitude of attraction, and at the same time of repulsion, which is generally associated with nature for its beauty, its vastness and its overwhelming strength in front of which man experiences his own smallness. Among the artists who paved the way for Romanticism we remember Turner and Friedrich . In the works of the latter there are often references to Gothic architecture, in the form of ruins and which bring us back to the Gothic literature of the period . In the German context, the fascination for ancient Germanic culture produces epic works such as Richard Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelungs . UNESCO UNESCO After the Second World War, many states of the world unite to create the United Nations Organization (UN), in order to prevent such a devastating war from happening again. The United Nations organization, in turn, creates UNESCO, an agency that aims to promote culture as an instrument of peace. Its Constitution was signed on November 16, 1945 and entered into force on November 24, 1946, after ratification by twenty states: Saudi Arabia, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, China, Denmark, Egypt, France, Greece, India, Lebanon, Mexico, Norway, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Dominican Republic, United States of America, South Africa and Turkey, joined by Italy in 1947 . Today, 193 member countries are part of UNESCO, while 11 are associated. The primary purpose of UNESCO is to promote peace and understanding between nations and, at the same time, to promote universal respect for justice, the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms . In the Garden of Tolerance, there is a large monolith bearing the opening sentence from the Preamble of the UNESCO Constitution , which inspires all the actions of the organization. The sentence is written in the 6 official languages of UNESCO (Italian, Chinese, French, English, Russian, Spanish) plus Hebrew and Arabic. There is no must in art because art is free."
